He is a registered patent attorney, with experience in patent preparation and prosecution, patent strategy, patent opinions, patent licensing and contracts, and patent litigation. Umair has worked on patent matters in a variety of technologies, including pharmaceuticals, chemicals and chemical compositions, materials, biotechnology, medical devices, analytical instrumentation, clean technologies, food products, consumer products, and mechanical devices. He has also obtained trademark registrations in many different industries, and has handled trademark administrative proceedings and litigation. Umair works with foreign patent and trademark counsel on matters in other jurisdictions.

Prior to joining Scale, Umair managed an intellectual property law practice for over a decade. Before law school he was a graduate student in chemistry, where he studied the reaction of polar vinyl monomers with single-site olefin polymerization catalysts, and also worked on catalyst research in the petroleum refining industry.
